“We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history
when humanity must choose its future

the resilience of the community of life and the well-being
of humanity depend on preserving a healthy biosphere

the protection of Earth’s vitality, diversity
and beauty is a sacred trust.”

                         ~ from the Earth Charter

Dear Friends,

These words from the Earth Charter reflect the depth of values and
commitment that inform our work at Upland Hills Ecological Awareness
Center . To hold our Earth in “sacred trust” in these times is to care
for all that we hold dear. It means we commit our hearts, our minds, and
our resources to a task greater than we can fathom. It means we act as if
a brighter future that works for everyone is possible and doable, thereby
bringing the wheels of change into motion.

This coming year, we will be celebrating thirty years since the EAC broke
ground in 1977. The vision to create a place where people could come
together to dream, explore, celebrate and learn ways of living in greater
balance and harmony with the Earth and each other had begun to come to
life. Thirty years later, the dream and the work are as vital as ever!

In the course of this thirty year journey, we have welcomed many gifted
teachers and visionaries to our community from near and far. Many who we
call “world teachers” inspired us to step up to higher versions of
ourselves as responsible world citizens. Understanding that change in the
world begins as we individually grow and heal, the EAC has opened to and
shared many pathways for cultivating personal wisdom and wellness, as well
as avenues for acting positively for change in the world.

In recent years, a strong emphasis of our work has been on teaching and
inspiring sustainable choices through energy awareness. This focus
connects us with the original intent of the Center’s founders to create
a model for alternative energy. Essential to this work is the recognition
that our energy choices connect with so many critical issues of our times
including the devastating impacts of climate change, pollution, war and
terrorism, and economic instability.

Through our affiliation with the State of Michigan , Energy Office and our
designation as a Michigan Energy Demonstration Center , we have grown as a
respected voice for sustainability in the Great Lakes Bioregion. With
vital support from our members, friends and the State, we have enhanced
our capacity as a model for renewable energy, ecological design and
energy-efficiency through a number of upgrades to our facility and
innovative program design.

Always connected to this place we have been nurtured, but recognizing its
size limitations we have begun to expand our wings and assert a greater
presence in the larger community. Between our outreach and on-site
programs, the number of people we have reached with our message of
sustainability has more than quadrupled in the last several years, from
hundreds to thousands. Our audiences have ranged from students --
elementary through university -- to homeowners and business people wanting
to make more Earth-friendly choices in their everyday lives and work.

As more and more people awaken to the vital necessity for sustainable
approaches, the demand for our services is rapidly growing. In order to
respond we will need to bring on additional staff this year. While we plan
to continue hosting our ongoing events and programs, including our annual
Energy Choices Conference and Earth Day Expo, we also have some exciting
new projects on the drawing board including a fun, theatrical “road
show” for school assemblies, a green film festival and a special thirty
year anniversary celebration.

As we harvest the fruits of the EAC’s growth over thirty years as well
as the past year’s accomplishments, we are grateful to all of you whose
generosity has helped make it possible. As we lay the groundwork for the
next phase of our growth, we invite you to join with us in making a
difference through generously contributing to our end-of-year fundraising
campaign, Energizing a Brighter Future (EBF). The name affirms the power
of the sun as a source of both inspiration and most renewable forms of
energy. It also implies that money too is a form of energy which holds the
power to help protect the “sacred trust” upon which future generations
will vitally depend.

If you responded to our recent EBF mailing, we would like to express our
heartfelt appreciation. If not, we hope you will consider this on-line
opportunity to re-energize your commitment to these values through your
generous support of our work. To make a donation, simply cut/paste the URL
below to your browserr and you will be linked to our secure credit card billing form;
or, send a check made payable to UHEAC to the address below. Thank you.
