Here in San Francisco we also have an odd issue like the one you mentioned.
Proposal H looks like a simple "more parking spaces" initiative since on the
surface everybody wants more parking - until you realize more parking = more
congestion, traffic, lines, low quality of downtown life, etc.
The parking measure was created by Republican developer interests and the
CEO of Gap clothing and is filled with hidden clauses that allow unlimited
SUV access and would actually reduce neighborhood street parking by
mandating that all new construction have a private parking space for each
unit built!
The irony with all this is that many supposedly "pro transit" people WANT
this bill because they shortsightedly think "who DOESNT want more parking?"
and do not take anything else into consideration.
We are fighting this measure vehemently. www.transitnottraffic.com
Your story is an interesting reminder than any of us who put on events need
to take into consideration closeness to public transit and make special
mentions of the routes on our websites.
