VERMICOMPOSTING WORKSHOP: COMPOSTING INDOORS WITH WORMS w/ Jared Bogdanov, certified permaculturalist and organic grower
>
Tuesday, December 15th 6:00 - 7:30 PM
>
$10, plus cost of materials if requested
>
Are you tired of taking out your compost in the winter, just to watch it freeze (along with you!)? Do you live in an apartment or condo that doesn't allow for a proper compost pile? Or are you looking to get more "bang for your buck" with your current composting system? Well, winter is upon us, and it's the perfect time to bring your system indoors using worms or even start one for the first time.
>
> Vermiculture is the term used to describe the cultivation of worms. A worm composting system is quick and easy to set-up, and the benefits to your plants and soil are incredible. In this workshop, Jared Bogdanov will be providing you with a strong understanding of vermiculture, walking you through the processof building and maintaing your containers, and how to harvest and use the "black gold" (castings).
>
> Extra bins and worms will be available for sale, but supplies are limited. Please bring your own bins to build (two 6-10 gallon rubbermaid-style containers are best), or existing bins to amend and improve.
>
> Jared Bogdanov is a certified permaculturalist and experienced grower, raising vegetables, nuts, and fruits in Troy. He is a compost enthusiast and attributes much of his high productivity in the garden to his use of compost, including worm castings and worm tea. If you have specific questions about the class or would like to reserve bin materials and worms for the workshop, please email him directly at: jared.abundantsuccession at gmail.com and visit www.abundantsuccession.com for more information.

UPLAND HILLS SCHOOL'S SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
The purpose of the Upland Hills Sustainability Award (UHSA) is to enhance the traditional and creative methods that currently support and sustain Upland Hills School while working toward the realization of the long range plan developed by the UHS board in 2003.
>
> Our current sources of funding are tuition (90%) and creative fund raising (10%), which includes an annual auction and solicitations of annual giving. It is the intention of the UHS community to continue using these strategies and to create new, innovative income generating methods that reflect our values.
>
> The UHSA is thus our invitation to the greater community to encourage creative thinking and to apply that thinking to leveraging forward days. We have chosen to invest not only in our school but in ideas to capture creative sustainable solutions in these challenging economic times. We are looking for specific strategies that create alternative income streams which support UHS and its mission.
>
> For those who are courageous enough to create a strategy that will help UHS sustain itself into the future, the following will be awarded at a ceremony on Saturday, February 27, 2010:
$5000 for First Place
$3000 for Second Place
$1000 for Third Place
